Meatless Monday

We made:

 French Toast

from this cookbook:

Yummy!!!!

From the Breakfast Book:

French toast is so good that you forget how economical it is.  The french don't call this French toast.  They call it pain perdu or "lost bread," because it is a way to use up leftover bread you would otherwise lose - the only bread you've got on the baker's day off.  French toast is actually better if the bread is a little old or sliced and dried out overnight.

French Toast

3 eggs
3/4 cup milk, light cream, or heavy cream
salt to taste
6 slices bread (preferably a dense homemade type; typically white, but try rye or whole wheat too)
4 tablespoons of butter

Stir the eggs, milk, and salt briskly in a bowl with a fork until well blended.  Strain the mixture through a sieve(I did not do this I just poured it into the shallow bowl) into a shallow bowl in which you can easily dip a slice of bread.  Dip both sides of each bread in the batter and place the slices on a piece of waxed paper.

Melt 2 tablespoons of the butter in a skillet big enough to hold 3 slices at once.  Fry the bread over medium heat until very lightly browned, turning once.  Keep the cooked slices warm in a 250 F oven while frying the other three in the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter.  Serve warm with sprinkled confectioner's sugar.

  2. I want to learn how to make that bread so I can make that yummy french toast. We usually use whole wheat bread for our french toast and sometimes croissants, which are super yummy!

Thanks for always commenting on my blog, it is always a treat to see your comments. You've been very supportive! Thinking about you.
